UWL Students’ Union Spring Elections 2017

Here at UWL, our students’ union is run 'by students, for students'. To make this possible, SU Elections are run every year so that students can vote for who they think would represent our university in the best way possible. The people who get voted in, get to be full-time sabbatical officers of our Student Union, which means they are the ones leading it.

This year’s Spring Elections ran from the 21st till the 24th of March. There were four roles available: President, Vice President education, Vice President student activities and participation and Student Trustee.

As it’s very well explained on the UWLSU website (linked here: http://www.uwlsu.com ) they all have different roles and responsibilities. The President is the one who speaks on behalf of all the students and is also responsible for the financial and legal performance of the university; VP Education is in charge of improving everyone’s educational experience at UWL; VP Activities and Participation is in charge of making sure there are enough extra curricular activities such as sport and events for the students, so that a sense of community and belonging can be felt; finally, the Student Trustee will make key decisions regarding the Trustee Board, which means they have to make sure the student union is run according to law and constitution.

You should all know who the 2017 candidates were due to the amount of campaigning and posters around the three campuses, but here’s a refreshment: running for president we had Monty Bent, Mohammad Sehil Shelkih and the current UWLSU President, Big Dave Titley; running for Vice President Education we had Buki Ajimobi, Chloe Shimmin, Zahra Choudry, Irfan Damani and Sahar Noor; Vice President Activities and participation, Kat Hackshaw, Brett Sinclair and Antony Hamilton; finally, for Student Trustee we had Faiz Khan and Ashrib Shah Mohammad.

On the 24th of March, after the elections closed at 2pm, a very large amount of people working for the Students’ Union started counting the votes. As tradition, the people interested in knowing the results were waiting in Freddie’s Bar where there was a party vibe going on with music and a few drinks. They were counting votes until 12pm, it was a record of votes received over the part few years.

Therefore, we can finally say that the UWLSU new and not so new sabbatical officers for 2017/18 are:

Student Trustee: Faiz Khan

Vice President Activities and Participation: Kat Hackshaw

Vice President Education: Zahra Choudry

President: Big Dave Titley

We are all really confident they will do an outstanding job for our students’ union. Last but not least, we would like to say congratulations to every single person who run in these elections. It is no secret to anyone how stressing and tiring campaigning is.
